What the Government Can Do Today

One immediate measure would involve the Central Bank of Nigeria creating a special foreign exchange window for verified fuel importers. The second solution is a serious push for alternative energy. Solar power for homes and small businesses, and compressed natural gas for vehicles. The Presidential CNG Initiative launched in 2024 has made slow progress. A crisis like this provides the political impetus to accelerate it. Every bus and taxi that runs on CNG is a vehicle that is immune to the price of petrol. The transition requires upfront investment, but the long-term payoff is insulation from global oil shocks.
