Will Peter Obi Be Atiku’s Running Mate?

Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar are two popular politicians in Nigeria. Many people want to know if Peter Obi will be the running mate to Atiku in the 2027 presidential election. As of now, there is no confirmed announcement from either of them. Both of them have different political directions and they belong to different political parties.
Peter Obi was the vice presidential candidate to Atiku in 2019 under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). After that election, Peter Obi moved to Labour Party and became the presidential candidate in 2023. Atiku remained in PDP and also contested in 2023. This shows that the two politicians are not in the same party again. For Peter Obi to become Atiku’s running mate in 2027, he will need to return to PDP or they will need to form an alliance.
So far, Peter Obi has not said he wants to return to PDP. He has continued to support Labour Party. In many interviews, he talks about building a new political culture in Nigeria. He wants Nigerians to focus on character, capacity, and competence. This shows he is still serious about his plans with Labour Party. His supporters also believe he will contest again in 2027, not as a vice president but as a presidential candidate.
Atiku Abubakar is a former vice president. He has contested many times to become president. In 2023, he said the 2023 election was his last attempt, but later, he said he may still run if the party gives him the ticket. Atiku is known for building alliances before elections. In 2019, he picked Obi as running mate to gain support from the South East. Some political analysts say Atiku may try that strategy again. But the situation now is different because Obi is now a national figure and has his own structure.
There are also talks inside Labour Party about who should run in 2027. Some members believe Peter Obi should run again. Others are calling for a coalition with other parties. So, even inside his party, there is no full agreement yet. Some of his close supporters want him to focus on grassroots mobilisation and voter education before 2027. This is to avoid the kind of issues they faced in 2023 like weak party agents and poor logistics.
If Obi decides to join PDP again, it will bring many questions. People will ask if he is abandoning the Labour Party idea. It may also reduce the trust some Nigerians have in him. Many of his followers are young people who supported him because they saw him as different from the old political leaders. If he joins Atiku again, some of them may feel disappointed. But some political experts say if the goal is to remove the ruling party from power, alliances may be necessary.
Another thing to consider is zoning. In Nigeria, zoning is an informal agreement where power rotates between the North and South. In 2023, some people believed the presidency should go to the South because President Buhari is from the North. If PDP wants to follow zoning in 2027, they may choose a southern candidate. That will make it difficult for Atiku, who is from the North East, to get the ticket. If the ticket goes to the South, someone like Obi may get the chance to run under PDP, but that is not confirmed.
Nigerians also have to wait for what INEC will release about the timetable and rules for 2027 elections. Political parties must follow those rules. Before a candidate can become a running mate, their party must do primaries and follow party guidelines. These steps will take place closer to the election year. So, until then, any talk about running mates is speculation.
Right now, both Atiku and Obi are attending public events and making statements on national issues. This keeps them in the minds of voters. It also helps them measure their popularity. But none of them has started official campaign for 2027. The law does not allow early campaigns. INEC will decide when campaign can start. If any politician starts campaign before the time, they can be disqualified or fined.
People who want to follow this topic should watch verified political updates from the official pages of PDP, Labour Party, and INEC. These bodies will release real information as things develop. There are many false rumours online. Some people post fake headlines just to get attention. That is why Nigerians must be careful with political news that does not have sources.
For now, the most honest answer is that nobody can confirm if Obi will be Atiku’s running mate in 2027. There is no agreement between them. There is no press statement. There is no coalition. Political talks may happen in future, but nothing official now. If any new alliance comes up, it will be public.
If Peter Obi wants to run again, he will need to do more work on building strong party structure. He will need to get support from different regions. He will need to fix the problems Labour Party had in 2023. These include poor mobilisation in rural areas, lack of polling unit agents, and weak legal support. These are things that affected his chances in 2023.
If Atiku wants to run again, he will need to convince PDP members to support him. There are other people in PDP who may want to contest too. He may also need to explain why he is running again after many attempts. Some PDP members believe the party should bring a younger candidate. That is why internal party politics will play a big role.
It is also possible that new political alliances may come before 2027. Nigerian politics can change fast. Politicians switch parties. They form mergers. They agree and disagree often. That is why it is hard to say who will run with who until the election is near.
If you are interested in 2027 elections, you can start preparing now by getting your voter card, joining civic groups, and following real updates. Avoid fake stories. Watch what the candidates do, not just what they say. Check their records. Ask questions. Look at their plans for electricity, education, health, and jobs.
Also, INEC is likely to continue with BVAS and electronic transmission of results. This means candidates must have real support on the ground. They cannot just rely on social media. Nigerians should understand how to vote correctly and protect their votes. Civic groups can help with voter education.
In summary, there is no confirmation that Peter Obi will be running mate to Atiku in 2027. They belong to different parties. There is no coalition. There is no press statement. If anything changes, it will be clear from party actions and public announcements. Until then, all talks about it are just opinion. Nigerians should focus on facts and prepare well for the election.
